A riskier pick is Melting, who dies easily but reaps a greater Rad haul per kill, allowing him to access powerful upgrades much earlier-oh, and he can blow up corpses from afar. The coward’s bet is Crystal, who starts with more health and can transform briefly into a bullet-repelling chunk of amethyst (a later mutation allows her to teleport while in this state). Choice of character also, of course, shapes the the challenges ahead-besides a primary and secondary weapon slot.Įach protagonist sports an active and a passive ability that caters to a particular playstyle. My only negative feedback for this game would be that at the current time there is no official online multiplayer for the game which can make the game grow a bit stale over time unless you are lucky enough to play on Local Co-Op. If you are the sort of person who enjoys a challenge and gets a thrill out of fast paced rogue-like games, this is the game for you. It’s the scarcity that makes it so special. Nuclear Throne lures you in with glorious excess, but it’s ultimately a game about managing relative scarcity – health, ammo, hiding places. You never have quite as much ammo as you would need to feel truly comfortable every shot matters. Suddenly you realise it isn’t enough to spray lead, or grenades, or laser fire around like there’s no tomorrow, because tomorrow’s already here and your chamber is empty. As the game draws onwards, though, you get speedy snipers, you get baddies with their own insta-lasers, you get enemies that are increasingly as fast on the draw as you are. But you won’t at first, because it’s a Vlambeer game, and they’re generally about blitzing everything and holding down the trigger until you’re ready to pass out. The catch is this: on the early levels, the enemies fire slow-moving bullets and you have a lot of time to aim your shot and conserve your ammo. There’s a laser gun that sizzles the air as it draws a keylime-green line across the map, and there’s the disk gun from Super Crate Box, as deadly in its rebounds as ever. There’s a Halo-style two weapon limit that forces you, as ever, to make difficult choicesĪnd there are an array of treats waiting to tempt you: machine guns, pistols, hammers and shovels. Weapon drops that get steadily more powerful the longer you live, and ammo spread across the five types of weapon the game offers – good old standard bullets at one end, pure sci-fi energy at the other. This comes in the form of weapon drops and ammo for the most part. Sometimes you can wind up dead on the first screen and sometimes you can get to the end with barely a mark upon you. The game constantly pulls you back in with how different every single run can be. It takes getting used to and learning enemy shooting patterns is extremely important if you wish to progress to some of the later levels. Or you can dual wield weapons and play as crazy and fast paced as you want. You can play the game as a tanky character with a shield as an ability Blazing Beaks The game has twelve different characters which all have unique and special traits. The game feels very well designed and there is enough variety in all the different map layouts, upgrades and weapons that the game never feels dull Nuclear Throne, like most rogue-like games has various different ways to enjoy playing. The game runs very well and feels smooth even when there are multiple enemies and projectiles on the screen. The games menu screen and settings are all easy and swift to go through. At the current time, there are two game modes available to play: a single player mode and a Local Co-Op mode. The game is currently available on Steam for GBP £8.99. Nuclear Throne is a rogue-like fast paced game created by Vlambeer. But rushing forward to claim the rewards isn’t the wisest tactic in a world that’s home to assassins posing as corpses. It obviously encourages aggression, as does the fact that Rads (XP points) must be gathered before they blink out of existence-rinsing that corridor in one fell swoop might cost you an upgrade, if you can’t mop up all the Rads in time. This transforms a bullet-hell endeavour into a question of banking shots and pinball table multikills-a lucky thwack with a wrench might clear out an entire corridor, saving you precious ammo. One dramatically increases the force with which enemy bodies are thrown by a fatal blow. Faster movement-to esoteric mutations that suit more advanced tactics, such as being able to tunnel into walls for shelter.
